Full Description
1972.
Construction of inner ring road section linking Station Road roundabout and Magdalen Street flyover.
This showed nothing but post medieval back filling, rubbish pits, wells etc. and produced unstratified post medieval pottery, animal bones, clay pipes.
January 1972.
Rubbish pit and topsoil producing post medieval material including mainly lead glazed earthenware and Delft, stoneware and a pipe bowl. Material discarded.
June 1972.
On north side of ring road leading from Oak Street to Talbot Square.
A well, of about 1820 to 1830, About 6m (22 feet) deep with a brick and timber lining. It was probably the water supply to the tenement courtyard with a hand pump standing on top of the brick dome drawing through a wooden pipe (bored with an auger or burnt out).
Pipe syphon removed to Bridewell Museum.
