Summary

Set on the River Blackwater, this weatherboarded water mill and brick miller's house probably date from around 1846, although this has been the site of a watermill since at least the late 17th century. The mill house has now been converted for residential use.

Map

Long, tall weatherboarded building running east to west. Brick building set north to south across stream, three bays, two storeys with one tall window running across both floors.
Miller's house, three bays, two storeys, Georgian brick, set gable end on to this, and with four bay façade to north. Restored as a house.
E. Rose (NAU), 22 November 1978.

Marked on (S1).

1984 listing (S2) states mill 'not of interest' except for surviving wheel and machinery.
E. Rose (NAU).

Clearance of vegetation in December 1989 revealed that the gateposts to the drive of the mill house have the inscription 'T W Merrison February 28 1846'. This could easily be the date of the miller's house and the brick façade of the building across the stream. Note that the north gable of this building, hard against that of the house, is weatherboarded not brick.
Mr Merrison's tombstone is in Worthing churchyard, dated 9 November 1885.
E. Rose (NAU), 11 December 1989.

For medieval mill site and old sayings about it see NHER 2984.

Mill had moved to this site by 1675 as it is shown on Ogilvie's Roadbook (S3) of Kings Lynn to Yarmouth; the Elmham to Billingford road at that time ran adjacent to the north.
Copy of map framed in Elsing church also in file.
E. Rose (NLA), 17 February 1995.

Press cuttings (S4) and (S5) in file.
