Full Description
1976.
A well and two pits were found beneath the basement of the old Co-op building on demolition and excavation for new foundations.
Pit 8: post medieval sherds and clay pipes from the same pit at the rear of the original building.
Pit 9: At southwest end of the site about 2.5m below ground surface. Fills of grey silt, U-shaped, medieval sherds (including rim of face jug).
Pit 3: not seen. Found by workmen.
Well 4: Diameter at surface 1.30m by 1.40m, diameter at base 82m by 0.92m.
Depth 3.90m into natural chalk (dry May 1976).
For the first 2.48m it was lined with whole and broken bricks and flint nodules set in a very clayey mortar. The lining was about 15cm wide.

Great quantities of early to late 17th century pottery (including Dutch slipware, lead-glazed earthenware, stonewares), clay pipes, metalwork).
Pit 11: flint lined ?cess pit/soakaway discovered by the workmen. About 1.5m in diameter. Only the bottom 1.5m survived, and only in section. Post medieval pottery.
