Full Description
1976. Trenches 2.5m deep were dug around the margins of the site, No 76 Rose Lane.
Occasional medieval sherds. Trenches on the east side were cut through modern makeup, with few finds. On the west side the trenches were cut through thick bands of clayey silt. Natural was not picked up anywhere on the site. The section of the trench at the north end of the site differed from that drawn having thin spreads of yellow mortar within the silt. In the centre of the west side was a 'soft water well' with a lining of red brick in yellow mortar and with a domed top. Not bottomed. Water level 0.5m. A similar well but cut through 19th century layers was found in the middle of the south end of the site. Both wells probably 19th century occasional medieval sherds, mainly late post medieval. Dutch slipware, lead glazed earthenware, stonewares and a spur.

Material from site consisted of one green glazed handle (14th-15th century).
Approximately three dozen lead glazed earthenware.
Four tin glazed earthenware, three Delft, five sherds ?Pisa ware.
One sherd slipware, four sherds Staffordhire slipware.
