Summary

In 1976 an excavation on this site recovered finds dating to the 13th and 14th centuries, in contexts that suggest this area was marshy at this time. A number of later road surfaces were also noted on this site, although the 19th century roads lie largely on the same line as the earliest ones, dating to the 17th century.

Map

June 1976. Trench 6.5m x 1.5m was excavated by M. W. Atkin for the Norwich Survey across the line of Old Cowgate.
The earliest dateable finds were of the 13th/14th century from marsh deposits. The earlier surviving road surface was of the 17th century, with a boundary wall and a series of yard surfaces to the west. The wall lay on the line of an earlier wall, again with yard surfaces to the west, but with no evidence of surfaces to the east. This phase may be as early as the 14th/15th century - but the amount of purely residual pottery on the site makes this by no means certain.
Any later road surfaces had been completely removed by 19th century drainage works. However the 19th century surfaces lay directly on the line of the 17th century road. [1]
