Full Description
1977. Building site.
Part of a Late Saxon kiln was found in a foundation trench along the north edge of the site, by workmen. The trench was then extended north by M. Atkin (NCM) in an attempt to recover the rest of the kiln structure.
The plan of the flue and part of the oven were recovered.
There was no trace of kiln furniture, although the lining of the kiln was intact.
The oven was a narrow oval shape. The flue opened out at its south end into a ?stoking area and a beaten earth floor.
The kiln sealed two pits also of Late Saxon date. Pit 8 filled with waste from a kiln.
M. Atkin (NCM).
Part demolition of a 16th century standing building. An 18th century window removed to NCM.
Flint lined well 16th-17th century with a 19th century brick dome.
Beneath the floor levels of the existing building were the remains of a clay-walled building.
See file for further details, and file NCM.
