Full Description

M. Atkin.
1997. Trial Trenching.
NAU re-excavation of this feature, and other trench within site. Contexts 2 to 101.
Indicates 13th/14th century attempts to raise level of land, with evidence of buildings, followed by post medieval building and levelling.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.58).
E. Rose (NLA), 10 September 1997. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 27 April 2019.
September 2002. Excavation. Contexts 102 to 155.
Evidence of two phases of land reclamation seen. The first phase probably associated with the construction of St George's Street bridge in the mid 12th century, the second with the construction of the adjacent Dominican (Blackfriars) Friary in the early 14th century. Between the two phases a pit was dug, possibly used for industrial purposes before being used for rubbish disposal.
See publication draft (S3) and assessment report (S4) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S5).
The associated archive has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.625).
J. Allen (NLA), 2 January 2003.
