Summary

An excavation was carried out in 1977 of the suspected line of the Saxon defences of Coslany. A considerable number of Late Saxon pottery fragments were found in later contexts. The earliest occupation on the site was of the 12th century, although a small number of Roman and Middle Saxon sherds were found in later contexts. A number of large pits possibly dug for the extraction of gravel were excavated across the southern half of the site in the 12th century. The earliest possible domestic occupation was of the 13th century with a post-hole structure dug along Oak Street. The main development began in the 14th century.
