Summary

Work on King Street road in 1977 and 1978 recovered a number of fragments of worked antler, from small bos or red deer, and reported a larger number remaining in situ. Some of these fragments had been worked. Unfortunately there were no associated evidence which could be used to date these finds, although a Late Saxon pottery sherd was later found, possibly in association with further antler.

1977. Road works.
A number of fragments of worked antler were found in spoil from the gas trench cut along King Street. These were identified by P. Lawrance (NCM) as probably being from red deer. There were five fragments in all recovered (finder reported that he had seen a considerable number more from same area). One had begun to be hollowed out, perhaps for use as a knife handle. Another may have been intended for use as a powder flask.
No associated dating evidence with antler.
Compiled by M. Atkin.

1978.
One Thetford Ware cooking pot rim Type 5.
Remains of small Bos and Red Deer antler tine (cut).
All from 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) depth but not certain if from same layer.
Compiled by W. Milligan (NCM).
