Map

1978.
A pipe trench was dug along the length of Elm Hill east to west, with a further trench dug northwest to southeast at the junction with Waggon and Horses Lane.
The trench was about 1m deep and cut natural chalk at about 35cm below the surface in the east to west trench.
M. Atkin (NCM) only able to watch the western 50m of this trench but workmen were definite that this was true of the rest of the trench.
The transverse trench did not cut natural. It cut through rubble and sand makeup over a possible road surface at the level of the present street level of Elm Hill.
This would appear (on the character of the mortar) to be late medieval/post medieval ?post 1506 fire.
No evidence was found for any possible ditch fill of the Late Saxon defences.
See (1).

It is possible that they run under the buildings on the south side of the street but this seems unlikely.
M. Atkin (NCM).
