Summary

In about 1953 a witch bottle containing iron nails and pins was found during the process of pulling down the Duke's Palace Ironworks located here. Later, in 1976, half of a roughly chipped Mesolithic flint axe/pick was found on the same site. Records also state that excavations along Duke Street frontage at an unspecified date unearthed a dump of horn cores contained in the silt of the flood plain of the River Wensum.

Found in ?loose spoil on the western half of the site:
1 Mesolithic flint axe/pick. Fragmentary, very roughly chipped.
Identified by T. Gregory (NAU).

Deep excavations over 3m. Site lies about 60m from the river right on the modern Duke Street frontage.
A dump of horn cores (Bos longifrons) found in the silt of the flood plain of the River Wensum. They were not in any recognisable pit. None of the other sections on the site showed anything beyond about 2m thick deposit of clean silt with water table about 1m below this. Group of 17th century pottery sherds from river, not kept.

Flint implements, flakes and pot boilers founds in peat on premises of Messrs. Barnards Ltd., St Miles Bridge.
N.B. B. Green (NCM) expresses serious doubts that this material is prehistoric.
