Civil Parish TERRINGTON ST CLEMENT, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

December 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The site actually appears as a lighter coloured or parched penannular area with a darker sub-rounded area at its centre. The feature is sub-oval in plan (S1) with an east to west length of 43m and width of 26m. The site is morphologically typical of a saltern mound, formed by the waste material from the sand-washing process during salt production. The mound is one of several, sparsely distributed mounds within this area that were presumably once positioned on the edges of saltmarsh channels. The position of the mound, to the seaward side of the Sea Bank (NHER 2187), might suggest a post Saxon or medieval date but an earlier date cannot be ruled out.
M. Brennand (NMP), 18 December 2002.
