Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The main feature within the site is an irregular shaped area of light soil or parching, with the appearance of a truncated saltern mound (S1 and S2). The northern, eastern and western sides of the feature appear to be relatively straight and regular, while the southern side appears to be truncated by bank NHER 27943. The feature actually appears as three distinct areas of light colour, although this is probably due to it being later truncated and divided by three drainage ditches. To the north there are three fragmentary lengths of irregular bank. It is not clear what this feature may be, or how old it actually is, although it is almost certainly anthropogenic in origin. The feature may be a medieval saltern mound that has undergone alteration in the Post-medieval period, possibly to act as a platform above the water level on the saltmarsh. To the immediate south is a sub-rounded mound (S1 and S2), surrounded by a narrow ditch, with a single offshoot of linear ditch running southwards from the feature for a length of 95m. The feature has a diameter of 41m. This is possibly a small medieval saltern mound. Both the rectangular feature and the rounded saltern appear to have been truncated or post-dated by the sea bank NHER 27943.
M. Brennand (NMP), 25 October 2002.
