Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
This appears to be a large, elongated saltern mound (S1) although it may have been truncated and spread to some degree during the construction of a narrow gauge mineral railway (NHER 24222) which terminates at this location. The mound is centred on TF 6316 2464 and has a maximum south-west to north-east length of 200m. The mound was still large enough to be recorded with a 5m contour by the Ordnance Survey (S2) in the twentieth century. This feature forms part of a dense concentration of saltern mounds located along the saltmarsh in North and South Wootton. Direct dating evidence is scarce but isolated finds of pottery would suggest that the majority of the mounds are medieval in date. There is a sub-rounded ditch or depression cut or worn into the top of the mound which is likely to be relatively recent in date, possibly relating to the railway NHER 24222. There is a short length of ditch to the north-west (TF 6309 2467 to TF 6314 2370) which is likely to be relatively recent in date.
The mound is also crossed by Post-medieval sea defence bank NHER 27104.
M. Brennand (NMP), 18 October 2002.
