Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The bank is visible for a length of 430m (S1), although it almost certainly originally extended further to the west. The feature runs in a south-west to north-east direction across the former saltmarsh, skirting around the north-western corner of saltern mound NHER 27102 and crossing the eastern part of that mound. Indeed, the mound may have acted as a quarry for some of the bank material. The feature is likely to have continued to the north as sea defence bank NHER 26882.
This stretch of bank is almost certainly part of the large sea defence bank also recorded as NHER 5528, probably dating from the seventeenth century. The feature obviously post-dates the saltern mound NHER 27102, which is likely to be medieval in date, and is in existence by 1732 (S2).
M. Brennand (NMP), 21 October 2002.
