NHER 27131 (Monument record) - Medieval saltern mound

The site actually appears as two mounds split by a ditch and hedge, although they were almost certainly originally all one large mound (S1). The mound appears to be rounded in plan, and the complete feature has an east to west length of 85m and a width of 60m. There appears to be a narrow ditch excavated around the western end of the mound, which may have acted as a boundary feature or a drain. This feature may be contemporary with or may post date the saltern.
This is almost certainly a saltern mound, and forms a small group along with sites NHER 13784, 27129 and 27130. This in turn is part of an extensive saltern complex on the former saltmarsh at South Wootton. Dating evidence for the salterns is scarce although isolated finds from sites further to the north would suggest that the majority of these mounds are medieval in date. The are now houses built on the site of this mound.
