Full Description
August 2001. Norfolk NMP.
The bank is visible running from Snettisham port in a northwesterly direction for a total length of approximately 1.5km, before joining up with bank NHER 26611 (S1). The bank has an approximate width of 10m. This is the northernmost section of the Wolferton bank, which continues for a considerable distance to the south. The bank is depicted on Faden’s map (S2) of 1797 and is likely to be 18th century in date, although a later 17th construction date cannot be ruled out. It is likely to have been upgraded and altered since its initial construction.
It is likely that this bank post dates the bank to the east (NHER 26611), which it appears to butt up against, and was a later addition to reclaim a further area of land on Wolferton Marsh. There is a later stretch of bank extending to the west from the southern end of this bank (NHER 26644), which is likely to date from the second half of the nineteenth century.
M. Brennand (NMP), 9 August 2001.
