Full Description
May 2001. Norfolk NMP.
A Minefield is visible on RAF 1944(S1), 1945(S2) 1946(S3) and Floodlight (1953)(S4) aerial photographs. In appearance, it consists of parallel rows of small circular pits. It is linear and ranges between NGR. TF6480 3130 and NGR. TF6474 3265. It is over 1km in length, lying along the line of (and just behind) the beach and ranges between 10 and 40m in width. It is most likely to date to WWII and would have formed part of the coastal defences in this area.
It is possible that the minefield continues behind the beach huts, and is not just in front as currently plotted. However, this is not particularly clear and the disturbed area behind the beach huts might actually be to do with the adjacent gravel extraction site.
In addition to all this there appears to be a small structure of unknown purpose near to the northern end of the minefield. It seems to be raised and rectangular with a hole or darkened area centrally on top. It is located at NGR TF6475 3265 and is around 6m by 3m. It has the appearance of being associated with the minefield or at least a military origin.
The minefield is not visible on more recent NLA photographs.
H. Clare (NMP), 8 May 2001.
