Map

June 2001. Norfolk NMP.
Sea defences in the form of linear earthwork banks are visible on RAF 1946 (S2-3) aerial photographs and more recent NLA oblique images (S1). They form a part of a series/network of sea defences in this area (see also NHER 26638, 26642, 26643, 26644 & 26646). The main bank follows the line of the coast, just behind the beach. It runs from NGR. TF6472 3349 to TF6475 3375. It is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1:10000 base map (S5), but is not apparent on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map. However there does appear to be some form of embankment on Faden’s 1797 map (S4) running along the length of this stretch of coast, though whether that is just the dunes or an actual bank is not clear. At the southern end of this bank a smaller bank continues along on the same line (NGR. TF6475 3375 to TF6479 3201), with a small break in it. However this bank is not marked on the Ordnance Survey 1:10000 base map (but the embankment (?) on Faden’s map is still apparent).

The origin and date of these banks are unknown.
H. Clare (NMP), 19 June 2001.
