Summary

Aerial photographs from 1946 and 1995 record the presence of sea defences built as linear earthwork banks. The exact date of their construction is unknown. In 2004 the Norfolk Rapid Coastal Survey noted at least three banks, which were probably part of sea defence works, although one (or all) may have been associated with quarrying activities to the west.

Map

June 2001. Norfolk NMP.
Sea defences in the form of around four linear earthwork banks are visible on RAF 1946 aerial photographs (S1) and more recent NLA images (S2). They form a part of a series/network of sea defences/land reclamation in this area (see also NHER 26638, 26641, 26643, 26644 & 26646). They range from 460m to 120m in length. These banks follow the line of the coast, just behind the beach, and run from around TF6480 3198 to TF6483 3112. They are marked on the Ordnance Survey 1:10000 base map (S4), but are not apparent on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey. However there does appear to be some form of embankment on Faden’s 1797 map (S3) running along the length of this stretch of coast, though whether that is just the dunes or an actual bank is not clear.
The origin and date of these banks are unknown.
H. Clare (NMP), 19 June 2001.

May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 4), Context 1071:
At least three banks, together up to 70m wide; the tallest up to 8m in height.
Probably part of sea defence works, although one (or all) may have been associated with quarrying activities to the west.
See assessment report (S5) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
