Map

June 2001. Norfolk NMP.
Sea defence structures can be seen on the beach in the RAF 1946(S1) and floodlight (1953) (S2) aerial photographs, as well as on the Ordnance Survey 1967 aerial photograph (S3). However, they are not very clear on photographs taken since the Ordnance Survey 1967 aerial photograph, as the inland section has become covered with sand (this has started to happen in the Ordnance Survey 1967 aerial photograph). These structures comprise a series of groynes linked (at their inland end) by two long parallel 'barriers' with shorter lengths zig-zagging between them. This complex ranges between NGR. TF6465 3330 and NGR. TF6492 3408. These sea defences would appear to be fairly modern, but were in existence prior to World War Two and are now largely covered by sand. (Their exact date of origin is unknown).
Located at the back of these sea defence structures (on the inland side), there appears to be some form of wall visible on the RAF 1946 photographs. This wall is about 850m long, ranging from approximately NGR TF6466 3330 to NGR TF6496 3407. It seems likely that this is associated with the military complex (NHER 23145) located just inland (to the east) of this site and is some form of temporary structure. (This wall has not been plotted).
(Note. Due to the coastal location of this site, the mapping (of the northern section in particular) was awkward, as suitable control points were scarce).
