Map

April 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmark of a linear feature 325m long and between 4 to 8m across, visible on Ordnance Survey aerial photographs from 1967 (S1). This appears to have been a bank or a raised or compacted path /road. This leads to the chalk pit and limekiln site to the southeast. as marked on the 2nd ed map (S2). It also seems to post date a linear boundary (NHER 26822), which is thought to be medieval to post medieval, although this relationship is not definite. The feature may represent the old access road to the chalk and lime site. However 18th century Enclosure maps (S3) and (S4) of the area show the route to the site as being the same as it is shown on modern maps. This could imply that this road to the site might be earlier. A road/trackway can be seen on the 1623 map of Heacham Manor (S5), which appears to follow the same course down to a faint circular feature, which may be the chalk pit itself.
S. Massey (NMP), 25 April 2002.
