Summary

An area of extensive medieval earthworks representing the former extent of the village, which shrunk during the medieval and post medieval periods. The earthworks, which are clearly visible on the ground and on aerial photographs, include hollow ways, enclosures, a moat and fishponds. Part of the site was excavated by the NAU in 1994 but no archaeological finds or features were discovered. Neolithic flints and pottery dating from the late prehistoric to the post medieval periods have been found on the site. In 1962 a floor of unknown date was observed after being cut by the construction of a new cut-off channel from Denver to Hockwold.
