Summary

The cropmarks of a probable trackway or road of at least medieval date, with possible earlier origins, are visible on aerial photographs of Kilverstone. It is probable that this route formed a continuation of NHER 5934, which is thought to be trackway branching off from the Icknield Way (NHER 1398).This trackway or road is likely to be at least medieval in date and is likely to form a continuation of the Green Lane to the south, formerly the Thetford Road (S3). It has been suggested in NHER 5934 that this represents a prehistoric routeway and the NMR records suggest a possible Roman road running along this route between Caistor and Icklingham (NMR LINEAR 407 and NHER 6035), although the relationship of the cropmarks recorded here and those hypothetical Roman roads is uncertain. Trial trenching in 2023 did though suggest that these cropmarks were associated with a feature of geological origin.

Map

March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a probable trackway or road of at least medieval date, with possible earlier origins, are visible on aerial photographs of Kilverstone (S1-S2). It is probable that this route formed a continuation of NHER 5934 -which is thought to be trackway branching off from the Icknield Way (NHER 1398) - although a slightly different route to the west has been recorded for this linear. The trackway or hollow way is up to 8.5m wide and is centred on TL 8911 8488 and has a spread of lighter coloured material to the immediate east of the ditch (S1), however this was assumed to be of natural origin and was not mapped, but the extent of which was included within the monument polygon. However this feature may be the ‘gravel road’ previously seen on aerial photographs, see NHER 5934 for details. This trackway or road is likely to be at least medieval in date and is likely to form a continuation of the Green Lane to the south, formerly the Thetford Road (S3).

May 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed electrical substation and route of associated supply cabling.
A trench placed to coincide with this cropmark suggested it may actually be associated with a periglacial feature.
See report (S4) and NHER 64810 for further details.
