Full Description
December 1952. Scheduled.
This was one of three areas in Markshall parish which received Scheduled Monument Protection.
Scheduled as County Number 245 and known as "Sites discovered by air photography at Markshall", the areas were labelled A-C.
This was area B, centered TG 235 045. It was described as "Southwest of The Carr circular crop markings show in air photograph taken in 1933." These have now been recorded as part of a barrow cemetery (NHER 51966) and all barrows have been recorded individually.
This barrow was formerly recorded under NHER 9789.

The cropmarks of a late Neolithic and/or Bronze Age barrow with a penannular ditch is visible on aerial photographs to the west of the River Tas (S1-S12). The site is centred on TG 2343 0470 and was formerly recorded under NHER 9789. This barrow, formerly recorded under NHER 9789, forms part of a cemetery (NHER 51965), situated in a slight crest that overlooks the river and is located approximately 650m to the south of the hengiform monument and possible mortuary and/or ceremonial enclosure at Markshall (NHER 9582-3) and these form part of a wider group of ceremonial and funerary monuments focused on the confluence of the Rivers Tas and Yare. The line of the barrows are located in-between the 5m and 10m contours, overlooking the Tas valley to the east.
In 1970 and 1973 the soilmark of a former central barrow can clearly be seen (S5, S7). This appears to have been 22m across and is located within the northeastern arc of the broad encircling ring ditch, rather than the centre. The barrow mound was immediately surrounded by a ring ditch. It is possible that the mound and the broad encircling ditch represent two separate phases of construction. A central pit visible within the centre of the ring ditch (S8), once the all traces of the mound have been plough-levelled. The broad outer ditch may be later addition to the site, although it is feasible given the appearance of the ditched enclosure that it may be a hengiform type monument dating to the later Neolithic to early Bronze Age. A significant number of Neolithic axes (at least fifteen) have been found within the vicinity of the barrow cemetery (NMR TG 20 SW 74). The barrow ditch is markedly hexagonal in shape, although on some aerial photographs it looks more circular. The external ditch is 3.5-4m wide and has a clear causeway in the ditch to the southeast. The terminals of the ditch are rounded, although not emphasised or bulbous as may be expected of a more characteristically hengiform monument.
This barrow was formerly recorded under NHER 9789.
