Summary

The cropmarks and soilmarks of a Bronze Age barrow with an outer bank are visible on aerial photographs to the west of the River Tas. This barrow, formerly recorded under NHER 9789, forms part of a cemetery (NHER 51965) that overlooks the river and is located approximately 650m to the south of the hengiform monument and possible mortuary and/or ceremonial enclosure at Markshall (NHER 9582-3) and these form part of a wider group of ceremonial and funerary monuments focused on the confluence of the Rivers Tas and Yare.

The cropmarks and soilmarks of a Bronze Age barrow with an outer bank are visible on aerial photographs to the west of the River Tas (S1-S6). The site is centred on TG 2343 0461 and was formerly recorded under NHER 9789. This barrow forms part of a cemetery (NHER 51965) that overlooks the river and is located approximately 650m to the south of the hengiform monument and possible mortuary and/or ceremonial enclosure at Markshall (NHER 9582-3) and these form part of a wider group of ceremonial and funerary monuments focused on the confluence of the Rivers Tas and Yare. The line of the barrows are located in-between the 5m and 10m contours, overlooking the Tas valley to the east.
The soilmarks of a central, slight oval barrow are visible on a number of aerial photographs dating to the 1970s (S4-S6). This measures approximately 20m by 18m. This is surrounded by a ring ditch, 2-2.5m wide. On the majority of the aerial photographs the ring ditch looks like a complete and unbroken circle. However in July 1957 (S2-S3), the cropmarks would appear to suggest a differentiation in the ditch, perhaps caused by a greater depth to the ditch along the northeastern and southwestern arc of the ditch, giving it a ‘hengiform’ appearance. It is interesting to note that the southeastern section of potentially shallower ditch mirrors the positioning of the causeway on the outer ditch on the barrow 60m to the north (NHER 51961).
The mound and encircling ditch appear to have been surrounded by an outer bank. In mid May 1970 the soilmarks of this bank appear to have a wide causeway to the south (S5), although this break in the soilmark is not apparent in early May 1970 (S4) and would suggest that the appearance of the feature was fairly temporary or ephemeral. It is possible that further agricultural activity has taken place in the field in the intervening fortnight or that germination and growth of plants is starting to obscure the soilmarks.
This barrow was formerly recorded under NHER 9789.
