Map

January 2011. Norfolk NMP.
The soilmarks and cropmarks of a probable medieval, or medieval to post medieval, road to Thetford leading from the medieval College and church at Rushford (NHER 6092) are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The site is centred on TL 9191 8130 and consists of two parallel bank-like features which follow on from a tree-line boundary running towards the College. The line of this route is depicted on a restored plan of the college drawn in 1888 (S3) as a road to Thetford. A track is marked following a similar, although not identical, route through this field on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S5), which links up with the line of NHER 5969, an undated trackway, the line of which is marked as crossing the possible road identified on the aerial photographs. The road or trackway continuing to the northwest across the heath is depicted on Faden’s map of 1797 (S4), but has been removed by the time of the Ordnance Survey first edition map (1889 to 1891) (S5). The levelled earthworks and cropmarks of part of this route are recorded under NHER 54581.
