Full Description
April 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Possible traces of ridge and furrow, cultivation or plantation ridges, probably of post-medieval date, are visible as earthworks on imagery from a recent lidar survey (S1), and possibly also on 1940s aerial photographs (S2). The features appear to follow two opposing orientations, perhaps indicating cross-ploughing. They may have been created during short-lived arable cultivation of heathland, or to grow fodder crops for rabbits. Alternatively, they might have been created to aid the establishment of forestry plantations. A post-medieval date is likely for all these processes and is also suggested by the straightness and narrowness of the ridges, but an earlier origin cannot be ruled out. Equally, a more modern origin relating to forestry or heathland management is also possible. Other sites of a similar nature have been recorded in the vicinity (NHER 61546 and 61545, for example).
