September 1976. Building Survey.
Examined by Royal Commission.
Two storey and attic house of red brick with pantiled roof. Probably originally timber-framed but later encased. Although the inside has been completely altered to accommodate a public house it appears that it orginally had a three-cell plan of a type more to be expected in the country than in the town.
Two moulded beams on first floor. Roof is of six bay with butt-purlins.
In the 19th century the west part was joined to the adjacent mid 19th-century house on the north to give increased public accomodation. At this time the first floor combined room was presumably a club room.
A small winding stair in the south-east corner leads to the attic and formerly also led to the ground floor.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 October 2018.
This building is amongst those listed in thesis (S3), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century buildings of Norwich. It is described as a 17th-century two-storeyed building ranged along the street, with a brick skin that may conceal a timber frame. It has an axially off-centre stack, plus another stack against the opposite gable. It is stated that the internal alterations made to accommodate its use as a public house mean it is now difficult to assess the original lay-out.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 9 October 2018.
