Summary

Excavation in 1985 recovered a number of features on this site, on the north bank of the River Wensum just east of the Fye Bridge, dating from the Late Saxon to post-medieval date. This included a wicker fence of probable 10th century date, as well as a cess pit dating to the 11th century and a late medieval wall. Finds included a number of items from the 8th and 9th centuries. Evidence for Late Saxon or medieval tanning, hornworking and metal working was also noted. 19th and 20th century industrial buildings were surveyed prior to demolition. Subsequent to the excavation, a wooden pier at the southwest corner of the site, once used for tipping domestic rubbish into wherries, was dismantled and then restored.
