Full Description
September 2021. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A group of mounds most likely dating to the Second World War are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S2). The features consist of four small circular mounds and a larger roughly oblong mound. The features most likely relate to military training features as part of the larger area of Second World War training on Cawston/ Marsham heath (NHER 64231). The features seem to have been subsequently levelled with one of the mounds (centred at TG 1775 2322) possibly surviving as an earthwork on recent (2017) visualised lidar data. The features are in close proximity to a record for a possible Bronze Age round barrow (NHER 7491). It Is unlikely that these mounds relate to Bronze Age barrows as the features look too recent on the 1940s aerial photographs (S1).
