Summary

An extensive area of undated, perhaps post-medieval, boundaries and trackways is visible as earthworks, soilmarks and cropmarks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery. Although most are not depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 6-inch map, they conform to the same general pattern of enclosure, indicating that a post-medieval date for many of the features is likely. While some of the features are levelled, others still survived as earthworks in 2015.

Map

February 2018. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
An extensive area of undated, perhaps post-medieval, boundaries and trackways is visible as earthworks, soilmarks and cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S3) and lidar imagery (S4-S5). Although most are not depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 6-inch map (S6), or on other readily accessible 19th century historical maps, they conform to the same general pattern of enclosure, indicating that a post-medieval date for many of the features is likely. One track (visible between TL 7999 9109 and TL 8045 9112) was in use in 1946 (S2-S3). Some of the less substantial features (for example, at TL 8099 9067) could be of modern origin, perhaps related to forestry activity. While some of the features are levelled, the lidar imagery indicates that others still survived as earthworks in 2015.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 1 February 2018.

March 2018. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
This site has been extended to include banks of probable post-medieval, or potentially medieval to post medieval, date, to the west, also visible on aerial photographs (S7-S9) and lidar imagery (S4-S5). Some elements of these boundary banks have been previously recorded, for example NHER 49732 - NHER 49734, and NHER 61156. As stated above while some of the features are levelled, the lidar imagery indicates that others still survived as earthworks in 2015.
S. Horlock (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 10 March 2018.

August 2020. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Additional banks, visible as earthworks on visualised lidar data (S4), have been recorded as part of this site. The Monument polygon defining the extent of the site has been expanded accordingly [1].
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 8 August 2020.
