Full Description
June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The site described below was previously recorded as part of NHER 12776.
A Neolithic to Bronze Age linear barrow cemetery is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S6), between TG 2376 0583 and TG 2392 0582. Three ring ditches and/or barrows are visible (NHER 52303-5), aligned approximately east-west. The westernmost (NHER 52303) is rather oval in plan, indicating that it may represent an oval barrow of Neolithic date; the others are more circular and more likely to be Bronze Age in date. Additional possible ring ditches are evident in the surrounding area (NHER 52301, 52300, 52331), and the group forms part of a complex ceremonial/funerary landscape focused on the Neolithic henge or henge-like monument at Arminghall (NHER 6100), which lies approximately 175m to the northeast. It is notable that as well as occupying a significant topographic location just below the confluence of the Rivers Yare and Tas, the cemetery (and specifically the westernmost oval barrow) lies on the direct line that can be drawn between Arminghall Henge and a second henge-like monument at Markshall 660m to the southwest (NHER 9582). The cemetery is co-located with a Mesolithic and Neolithic to Bronze Age flintworking site (NHER 12776), and also further cropmarks of undated linear ditches and pits (NHER 52306).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 24 June 2010.
